Style
If you have a particular style of photograph in mind for your pictures and can find examples on the web or in a magazine then please show us. It makes life so much easier for photographer, makeup artists and stylists if you can share a picture of the kind of feel you're looking for from your photographs: classic, contemorary, romantic, 1950s retro – or Avril Lavigne?!
Location or studio
Don't limit your thinking to your shoot being confined to a studio. A portrait can really come to life if shot in an environment which is familiar and typical of the subject. A portrait of an artist would be so much better shot in the studio amongst the paints, brushes and canvases.
Be happy with your clothes
Choosing the right clothes to be photographed in is really important. Take some time in choosing ones that you like, that fit you well and that you won't be embarrassed to see yourself wearing in 12 months! The best ones to go for are fairly simple, plain, classic designs - they will stand the test of time much better than the latest fad. If you're unsure then bring a selection with you - we can help you choose what makes you look your best.
Colours
It is ideal to choose colours that complement each other - especially for a family portrait. If everybody is wearing cream and little Jack is in a bright red top he'll really stand out! If that isn't the effect you're after then choose colours with care. If you're unsure then please ask - we'll help you!
Retouching - nobody escapes!
Virtually everything I shoot spends some time in photoshop before leaving the door. Simple retouching such as contrast changes or blemish removal are standard. The image below has had such treatment, with a subtle sepia toning added - along with stronger catchlights in her eyes.
